EPM 11.2 first installation first feedback

EPM 11.2 first installation first feedback

After a long long wait, EPM 11.2 binaries have been released Dec 18th on Oracle eDelivery.

As a reminder, this version should be the last EPM Hyperion On-Premise release, supported until end of 2030.

Lets go for a first installation and first feedback! And as a first advice: read carefully the readme and installation guide (see useful links at the end of the post).

Package download

As usual, download the EPM packages from Oracle eDelivery.

Be sure to choose Oracle Hyperion Planning Plus if you need the full Hyperion stack including Essbase (Essbase package is not included in Oracle Hyperion Financial Management Plus):

Then build the EPM installer as usual by unzipping the zip files. Please note you only need yellow packages hereunder to install standard Hyperion platform (HFM, Planning, Essbase, FR, FDMEE):

The total size of the packages including OID is about 20 GB, 16 GB for Oracle Hyperion binaries.

Installation

Proceed exactly the same way you install Hyperion 11.1.2.4!

About 13 GB are needed to install the full Hyperion stack.

Architecture of this first installation:

  • One EPM 11.2. box on Win 2016 x64 SE
  • One SQL 2016 database box

Configuration

Be careful here: before starting the configuration, you need to use the RCU tool to create the repository for FMW 12g. It could be a little bit confusing, since this repository comes in addition to the standard ones for HSS, HFM, etc… Also note that if you configure on SQL Server, the collation is not the same for the RCU repository and the standard Hyperion repositories. And don’t forget to update manually RCUSchema.properties to finish:

So once again, read carefully the documentation before starting the configuration.

Once the prerequisites have been applied, nothing new regarding the configuration process, except the process is a little bit longer (be patient):

First run

Workspace login page

Same than 11.1.2.4. Just have a look to the Copyright date to be sure it’s 11.2!

Workspace home page

Since the Reporting and Analysis architecture has been dramatically simplified, Workspace home page is also dramatically simple now!

After a first navigation in the different Hyperion modules, the conclusion is the screens are the same than Hyperion 11.1.2.4:

Shared Services

HFM Consolidation Administration

Planning

FDMEE

Calculation Manager

EAS Console is stil the same…

Don’t forget to change the JAVA_HOME path before first launch.

As a first conclusion

In an end-user perspective, the product is the nearly the same than the prior release. Please note that:

  • FR Studio thick client doesn’t exist anymore.
  • HFM Metadata editor doesn’t exist anymore (this feature should be available in the Workspace, to be tested).
  • Adobe Flash is no more needed for Calculation Manager.

In a technical point of view, the main benefit is the certification for recent OS and middlewares (Win 2019, FMW 12g, JDK 1.8…). We hope additional products will be added to the certification matrix soon (is Windows 2016 certified?? what about Chrome browser?).

Technical architects, be careful with the memory: 2 GB for each Web App seem to be the starting point!

Additional tests have to be done now regarding the application part and the way to upgrade (HFM, Planning, etc…): stay connected!

  1. Thanks for the comments! Very helpful. One comment. Oracle has not announced this will be the final version of Hyperion, they have only announced it will be supported through at least 2030.

I try to use OHS as HTTP server but it always get a connection refused error via workspace connection.
I can correctly connect to HSS, Planning, Odiconsole through their own ports.
There is no error during configuration processes.
Do you have any idea? Thanks!

    • Hi Nouveaute, I’m not sure how you managed HTTP server. As mentioned Wade, I did not get any issue on installation and configuration but validation saying
      ——————————————————————
      http://epm112:19000/workspace/logon
      Error:java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect
      Recommended Action:Start application

Any suggestion. It’s working on 28080 but not 19000

  3. Hi,

I didn’t configure OHS as http server but the internal WLS http server for this first install.
Could you check the wl_config file is fine? Maybe the WL proxy is not configured properly.
I assume OHS process and 19000 port are up.

    Cédric

  4. I have problems with OHS after configuration. I am able to start the service but 19000 port is not working. I am not able to bring up the OHS or Workspace URL with 19000 port

Are there any specific pre or post steps to get the OHS to work as expected?

    • Hi,

Regarding the different comments, it seems there is something wrong with OHS.
I’m going to test this point asap. In the meantime I’d suggest you to open an SR at Oracle support.

      Kind regards,

      Cédric

  5. There is no longer a service that brings up OHS, as in previous releases. You start the OHS node manager, then go to a cmd line, change directory to ..\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\httpConfig\ohs\ohs_component\bin and type startComponent ohs_component. You’ll see the httpd.exe processes launch in Task Manager. These replace the old Apache.exe processes in OHS 11g. I would suggest reading through the OHS 12c docs for more info. I have yet to do it myself. Looks like only a script would be the way to automate the startup of OHS now.

  6. Thank you very much for your comment Larry.
I wish you all an happy new year, a first challenge is to find the way to manage OHS stop and start using a Windows service!

    • Hi Deddy,

To fix your issue you need to start the Weblogc Admin Console before the first EPM services start.
This step is mandatory to create boot.properties for each Web Services.

      Kind regards,
      Nguyen
